Phe Phe was until the Tsunami from the 26.12.2004 one of the biggest tourstic destinations in and around Phuket. Many many Hotels and over 20 dive-operators, over 100 bars and restaurants was locatetd on this small island - in the daytime this beautiful island was terrible, you could only enjoy the wonderful beach and water after the day-tourists was gone. O.K. this problem is unfortunately a story from yesterdays.
Only some serveral hotels and bungalows above the hills haved survived. One good news is that the diving around Phe Phe Lee and Phe Phe Don is better than before, beaucse the “cleaning effect” has the water quality enhanced. We´ve also heard, that some hotels has already opened and day-trips are also possible. Hopefully the island will slowly start with the new season 2005/2006. Maybe in a few years Phe Phe and his people are the same than before, but hopefully not so crowded than before.
Diving:
Mostly you dive from Speedboats or Liveaboard Boats that start every morning from Phuket (Chalong) or his offshore islands, and then you dive of course at the famoust Maya-Bay in front of Phe Phe Lee.
Before the tsunami in this bay was so many non-diving tourist because of the movie The Beach . Abouve the surface you feel like in a funk-park, but for diving Phe Phe with this fantastic dive spots is really one of the best.
PS: If you´ve luck and not so many diving boats are in the maya bay it´s also a must to snorkel in the cristalclear water - sometimes you see leopard-sharks without tanks and weights.
Why is Phe Phe already one the best diving spots in the world? One reason is what i´m said, was the Tsunami´s cleaning effect and of course the dive spots like Shark Point, Anemonen Reef, King-Cruiser Wreck and many many more !!
So, if you´ve not a problem, that 2 or 3 boats stay on one dive-spot, Phe Phe is again and yet again a good choice for your diving experience, if you want your privatsphere especially under water than please avoid this destination !
